Majority of UK workers lacking energy and motivation

A new piece of research has highlighted a growing concern about the energy and motivation levels of the UK workforce, writes Talk Business Magazine.

According to a recent study conducted by Eden Springs, more than half of the country´s employees lack motivation in their current roles.

The survey of 500 office workers aged 18 to 65 asked respondents to rate their motivation and energy levels during the working week on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest level. Nearly half of those questioned rated their energy and motivation at less than 5.

Interestingly, it was the younger demographic - those aged 18-24 - who were the least energised, while those aged 35-44 had the highest motivation levels, with an average score of 5.9; although this is arguably still lower than desired.

Men fared more favourably then women, scoring an average motivation rate of 5.7, compared with 4.8 for their female counterparts. In terms of location, Northern Ireland appears to be the most productive region in Britain, scoring an average of 6.2; in contrast, the North West of england was the least motivated region, scoring 4.3.

Lack of motivation and engagement in the workplace can have a profound impact on a company´s productivity and overall bottom line. This means that in order to be successful, businesses need to make taking care of their employees a major priority.

Commenting on the survey results, Eden Kafevend´s head of marketing - Peter Sullivan-Stark - notes that they paint “a worrying picture,” expressing his concern about “the impact low motivation could be having on productivity levels.”

“We have all heard about the impact that sickness absence has on business – according to the Office for National Statistics, 131 million days were lost in the UK in 2013 due to illness. One can only wonder what low energy is costing businesses today,” he added.
