Most UK firms would consider hiring boomerang staff

New research has revealed that the majority of companies in the UK would be open to hiring ‘boomerang´ staff - those who are returning to a previous employer - the HR Director website reports.

The study, conducted by employment agency Robert Half UK, found that hirers are becoming more receptive to the idea of rehiring former members of staff. The majority (83%) of HR executives said they are more open to the idea now than they were three years ago, while just 7% said they were against it.

Rehiring so-called ‘boomerang´ employees appears to be a smart move for most. More than a third (36%) of HR directors have successfully rehired an individual who previously left their role at the company, while only a quarter (25%) said they had hired a boomerang employee in the past but would not do so again.

Interestingly, the report found that large organisations were more keen on hiring boomerang employees than smaller enterprises. Nearly half (49%) the HR professionals from large firms had successfully made such a hire, and only 4% said they wouldn´t consider the idea. In contrast, three times as many (12%) small companies said they wouldn´t consider hiring a boomerang employee.

There were also several factors that contribute to the rehiring of a former employee. The most important factor was having a successful track record, cited by 60% of HR executives. This was followed by the candidate´s fit into the company culture (40%).

With greater challenges in the ‘war for talent´ and mounting costs associated with the onboarding process, more than a third (36%) said that the benefits of reduced costs impacted their decision to take on a boomerang employee.

As Phil Sheridan – senior MD of Robert Half UK – explains, “This growing acceptance of boomerang employees emphasises the increasing fluidity of the job market.”

“Many firms see value and potential cost savings in allowing employees to expand their experience and skills set outside their organisation, leaving the door open for them to return at a later date,” he added.
